Year 7 Curriculum
All learning in the Middle School at Brighton Secondary School is based on the Australian Curriculum. Our teachers are experts in Middle Years education, and they have designed a curriculum that will keep you engaged and excited to learn.
Course Outline - General Selection & Think Bright Program
In year 7 you will study a full year of English, Humanities and Social Sciences, Mathematics, and Science in your home group class.
You will study a language for a full year, and you can choose between Japanese or French.
You will also experience one semester of HPE and six “taster” terms of elective subjects including Visual Arts, Drama, Food & Fibre, Design Technologies, Digital Technologies, and Music.
Your pattern of subjects is shown below, with each full row representing a full year subject and each half row representing a semester subject.
Year 7 Special Interest Music (SIM)
In Year 7 Special Interest Music you will study a full year of English, Humanities and Social Sciences, Mathematics, and Science in your home group class.
You will study a full year of Special Interest Music and a semester of Core Music.
You will study one semester of language, choosing from French or Japanese, and continue with this language for one semester in Year 8.
You will also experience one semester of HPE and two “taster” terms of elective subjects including Visual Arts and Digital Technologies.
Year 7 Special Interest Volleyball (SIV)
In Year 7 Special Interest Volleyball you will study a full year of English, Humanities and Social Sciences, Mathematics, and Science.
The Health and Physical Education curriculum is incorporated into the full-year SIV curriculum.
You will study a language for a full year, and you can choose between Japanese or French.
You will also experience four “taster” terms of elective subjects including Visual Arts, Drama, Design Technologies, and Digital Technologies.
Please note that there is a $200 subject levy charged for this subject.
Year 7 Subject Descriptions
Core Music (required for SIM)
In Core Music, you will have the opportunity to play in a class band, string ensemble or percussion ensemble. If you do not already play an instrument, that’s ok. We welcome beginners to Core Music. If you already play an instrument, that’s great, too. You will have access to free instrumental music lessons every week to support your learning. Instruments are available for hire from the school so there is no need to own or purchase an instrument. Choosing Core Music will also allow you to participate in the many co-curricular ensembles and choirs available before school, at lunchtime and after school. Core Music students are also eligible for the incredible local and international music tours.
French
In year 7 French you will be introduced to the beautiful French language and culture. We will learn how to interact and have conversations, introduce ourselves and talk about likes and dislikes and what we do in our free time in French. We will also learn about France and the many other French speaking countries and regions. Other fun activities will include discovering about French food and sport.
Japanese
In year 7 Japanese you will learn about the fascinating language and culture of Japan. You will learn how to introduce yourself, talk about hobbies and likes and dislikes, and family and daily routine in Japanese. You will master Hiragana, the first Japanese alphabet and learn some Kanji through fun and engaging activities. You will participate in fun cultural activities like origami and calligraphy and explore Japanese cuisine through cooking and visiting a Japanese restaurant. This course will cater to absolute beginners and those who wish to be extended.
