Principal Update #2 Term 4:

Term 4 is always something of a transition term in a range of ways.

We have a very comprehensive program for our 2024 Year 7 students and their families to help them feel connected with our school and comfortable about what we know will be a major transition for them to high school. To support this, we have run our second year of Student Profile Conversations with students and their families, providing an opportunity for a face-to-face conversation with a staff member, to raise issues and concerns and to enable us to have a fuller picture of the young person joining our school community. We have also scheduled a family afternoon tea, an information evening and a full-day transition program for the 300 plus Year 7 students joining us next year.

At the other end of the spectrum, we acknowledge and celebrate our Year 12 students, the Class of 2023. The final week of formal lessons featured a range of special events and activities, culminating in the Year 12 Breakfast. Exams and final assessments are completed, and we look forward to the Year 12 Valedictory at the Adelaide Town Hall on Wednesday 29 November. This will be a special event that provides an opportunity to recognise the achievements of our 2023 Year 12s as well as the significant contribution they have made to the life of Brighton Secondary School during their time here.

At Brighton Secondary School we value and promote high levels of student leadership and have continued to broaden leadership opportunities for our young people. This term also involves selection of our new teams of student leaders and a process of transition and handover from our current teams. We recognise our student leaders from this year and thank them for the legacy they leave.

This term is also a time of transition in terms of planning for 2024 and we are very busy developing our timetable, our budget, our calendar and our staffing and leadership profiles for next year. We also have a range of other events and activities happening including:

  • Professional Learning Day for staff on Monday November 20
  • ASPIRE Assembly on Tuesday November 21
  • Year 11 Exams from Thursday 23 November to Tuesday 28 November
  • Introductory sessions for Year 12 subjects for our current Year 11 students from Wednesday 29 November to Friday 1 December
  • SIV trip to the Australian Volleyball Schools Cup on the Gold Coast in Week 8
  • SIM International Music Tour to New Zealand in Weeks 8 & 9
  • Transition Day for 2024 Year 7 students on Friday 8 December
  • ‘Moving Up Day’ for students moving from Year 7 to 8, Year 8 to 9, and Year 9 to 10 on Thursday 14 December

As you can see, the final weeks of this term will be busy and productive.

We look forward to continuing working in partnership with you.

Kind Regards

Tony Lunniss
